Not to be confused with the famous British prime minister, Winston Churchill was a 20th century American author known for best-selling historical fiction and adventure novels. One of his novels, The Crisis, is set in the American Civil War and was the most popular book of 1901.

The Inside of the Cup Complete Winston Churchill 9781523300419 Books

Winston Churchill (the American, not the prime minister) had many best sellers in the early 1900's including this book. Some were riveting such as The Crisis. Others were more like romance novels, and I have not understood how they could be best sellers. The Inside of the Cup deserved to be the best seller it was. However, I am surprised that it was because of the subject matter. The general theme is about a priest who is losing his faith. He recovers his faith by discarding all the baggage that comes with various religions. As an example, he decides that it doesn't really matter if Jesus was born of a virgin or it that was just an invented concept to sway Roman pagans over to Christianity. This is why I am amazed that the book became a best seller. I would have expected the churches to censure the book. I strongly recommend the book. (This is coming from a non-believer.)

First published in 1913, Winston Churchill's The Inside of the Cup, deals with an Episcopal clergyman in a large midwestern city who loses his faith in traditional church doctrines and begins to espouse a more socially activist form of Christianity. The novel provides a good portrait of church life and religious controversy a century ago. Nevetheless, many of the controversies the author discusses are still topical How should one understand the Bible? How should we think about Jesus? What is the church's role in dealing with social issues? Why have so many people become alienated from organized religion? Although this is a novel of ideas, the action is well plotted and the characters are believable people. Churchill's sympathies are clearly with the liberal views of his protagonist, the Rev. Mr. Hodder, but he also creates a compelling antagonist, the financier Eldon Parr, who tries to thwart Hodder and who serves as an intelligent spokesman for political and religious conservatism. While part of the book's interest is as a document of its time, it is also compelling for its treatment of issues that are still with us a century after Churchill first published this book. (The author is Winston Churchill, the American novelist, not Winston S. Churchill, the British statesman.)
Very interesting
Each time I pick up one of his early books you see the mind going and how he looks at things that will be what saves his country. Quite a history lesson.
If you are looking for a story, look elsewhere. This is more about the author's personal religious philosophy than anything else.
At times, I found it difficult to believe this book was written a century ago. A common theme through out the book is how the church was being used by the ruling classes as an instrument of opression, and how little of church doctrine was able to stand up to careful scrutiny based on an honest reading of scripture. That was then, but it sounds suspiciously like a criticism of today's churches, the churches of Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Rick Warren, Pat Robertson, Al Mohler, James Dobson, et al., people who cheerfully lie to their flocks, while at the same time keeping them ignorant and impoverished, all to the benefit of a wealthy minority, who are, not incidentally, filling the pockets of said august clergy. I always find it comforting to be reminded that, "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose". I get this same feeling from reading Psalm 10. To paraphrase Jesus, "the rich scoundrels you will always have with you".

Winston Churchill, the American author whose historical novels were wildly popular a century ago, and who made a pact with his British counterpart that the latter would be distinguished by using his middle initial, 'S.', used this book as a means of defining his own personal theology. As such, the book would likely have no interest to a modern reader who has little knowledge or interest in religious matters. For those still struggling to understand what it means to be a Christian, the book has much to offer. This book contains some ideas with which many of us might not agree, but provides much food for thought. Members of fundamentalist sects, for whom thinking is anathema, would not find this book meaningful, but for the rest of us, it provides a most profitable read.

I suppose it's worth mentioning that the version I read on kindle was full of typos and other mistakes. Several of the names changed back and forth from one page to another, e.g. the main character was mostly Hodder, but sometimes Holder. Interestingly, the basic typography was not so bad, in that there weren't the annoying line breaks in the middle of paragraphs which mar so many public domain works on kindle.
